Together Growing

What We Do

Together for Sustainable Development (TSD) aims to empower remote communities to tackle poverty, exclusion, injustice, and conflict. By opening up opportunities to gain new knowledge and skills, we believe that life-long education can be a powerful instrument for social, economic and cultural transformation. Education has been TSD’s passion from the start, and we have a strong focus on sustainably improving education opportunities for children and youth in remote communities. But education is also woven into all our programmes as we bring learning opportunities to farmers, women, differently-abled people, and leaders of community-based organizations. We also recognize the links between education and other challenges faced in our communities. We therefore focus on four main programme areas:

Education

Obstacles to accessing quality education result in high primary school drop-out rates and very few secondary school graduates across Chin State.
In response, TSD promotes sustainable education by facilitating long-term healthy relationships between duty bearers, teachers, parents, and students in the community. Our aim is for every school-aged child to be enrolled in school and for communities to invest in education.

Food Security

Food insecurity is a chronic problem in much of Chin State which has the highest rates of malnutrition in the country. Traditional agriculture methods are no longer providing sufficiently for food needs and pose an environmental risk as populations grow.
TSD is addressing this situation by training local farmers on new organic upland farming methods, providing tools, seeds and irrigation systems, and supporting farmer cooperatives. We aim to build more resilient communities by opening opportunities to farm in ways that improve dietary diversity, enable year-round food availability, and protect precious natural resources.

Inclusion

The voices of young people, women, widows, and differently abled people often remain silent in Southern Chin State’s communities where older men hold most leadership roles. Marginalized groups face many difficulties including social stigma, discrimination, and obstacles to full participate in community life.
TSD works to transform this situation by advocating for conceptual and attitude changes, empowering marginalised groups through awareness of their rights, and creating opportunities for greater participation in the community. We aim to see communities where there is ‘a place for everyone at the table’ and ‘no one is left behind’.

Relief & DRR

Chin State experiences frequent cyclones, floods, landslides and earthquakes, and is increasingly feeling the unpredictable weather impacts of climate change. Additionally, conflict in the region periodically leads to displacement.
When people lose assets, crops, or have to leave their homes, TSD is ready to help with support such as food and hygiene materials to meet immediate needs. We also work to prepare communities for potential disasters.
